ALTERNATIVE RULES
Here you'll find alternative or additional rules that we've come up with to use for some of our games.
ALTERNATIVE 5TH EDITION RULES
This was a set of rules I wrote in 2011. There were several rules in 5th edition that had started to bug me a little, so I originally set out to just tweak the rules of these things. However, it soon started to take on a life of its own so I pretty much ended up writing my own edition! I've called it alternative 5th edition because the document details changes to the 5th edition rulebook. Now 6th edition is out (and at the moment seems to be quite good) I doubt these rules will get much use but they may still provide you with some ideas or inspiration. It was quite amusing to me how many of my ideas are the same or similar to ones that made it into 6th edition, and areas that they also changed to overcome similar faults but went about in different ways. All of these could make it into their own discussions elsewhere but for now I hope you enjoy reading through the rules document. I was working on new codices to go with these rules but I don't expect to continue with this (unless 6th edition starts to bug me like 5th did!). There is another PDF with sample stat-lines in so you can see where I might have been heading. If you want to try them out be aware: they are not all playtested (if you find any bugs let me know), and they were supposed to be used with the codices I was writing which would have different points costs in (which I'll put up if there's demand). For now just use your own codex, though if you want to try the new Space Marine stat-lines I'd suggest doubling most Space Marines' points costs as a guideline!

An APOCALYPSE SCENARIO
This is a scenario I wrote for an event at my local club. To keep the event less unwieldy and ensure active participation of all players, I split the scenario over two tables.
This scenario also requires the use of the Tactical Cards which you can find below.

TACTICAL CARDS
These are some added rules for use in your games. They were originally written for an Apocalypse scenario (which is above). They can be used in the same way in your own scenarios, or simply added in to any Warhammer 40,000 game. I would recommend using them in bigger games, however, as they might create an imbalance in a smaller battle - although I have used them even in 1000 point games before! As long as you and your opponent are up for a friendly game you should be okay...

ANOTHER WAY TO PLAY 40K
I came up with some new ideas and guidelines for playing pick-up-and-play style larger games.
These are an alternative to Apocalypse with a bit more structure and use of the Codex army lists and are meant to facilitate exciting and characterful gaming without a huge amount of prior planning and preparation.

Randomly Generated Army Lists
Over the years I have created and used many different methods for randomly generating army lists. I think doing this is a good thing, as firstly it gives you a very different challenge - achieving the mission with the forces you have been given rather than hand-picking your ideal force. Secondly it can lead to the discovery of new tactics, or the tactical worth of a unit you had previously dismissed.
There are a couple of different approaches. You could randomly pick a list and then collect the force you have ended up with - a good way to start a new force. On occasion I have even randomly chosen each unit's weapon options! You can choose your army list randomly and then take it along to your local club to take on someone else's hand-picked list. Or you can agree with your opponent that you will both use randomly generated lists. The method described here is one suggestion for how to do this.
